Chapter Thirteen
As soon as Amy and Jenna were picked up by their English driver, Harris walked Lindsay to her bedroom. He noticed how pale her face looked. âLindsay, you need to rest. Youâve had a stressful day in many ways. Is there anything I can get you?â
âI am exhausted, but itâs a good kind of exhaustion. It was a day well spent.â Lindsay gave him a big smile. âAmy and Jenna hugged me before they got in the car with their driver. I wanted to hug them but didnât know theyâd feel about it, so it was nice they made the first move. And they said theyâll pray for me daily.â
âIt went well, I think. They definitely connected with you.â
Lindsay nodded. âIâm glad you think so. I could tell theyâre interested in you too. It was a wonderful day.â
âI got the impression theyâre disappointed in Katie and Roman for keeping the secret from them.â Harris wasnât going to mention it, but he thought Amy sounded a bit jealous when she heard about Phoebeâs childhood. Was she disappointed Lindsay had kept Phoebe instead of her? To him, it would make sense because Amy wanted more out of life than an eighth-grade education. He was glad it came out how Katie made Lindsay promise never to tell the truth about their birth. But still, it had to hurt that Katie and Roman never told them the truth until they were forced to, and Lindsay hadnât broken her promise before now.
Once in her bedroom, Lindsay kicked off her shoes and sat on the bed. âAmy and Jenna are going to call me when they get home. Iâll take a nap while theyâre making the trip home.â
He fluffed her pillow. âIâll be in the living room if you need anything.â
âPhoebe left quickly, but thatâs nice she wanted to see Haley. Iâm sure sheâll be sharing about her Amish sisters. I hope Phoebe can have a strong sister relationship with Amy and Jenna, but itâll take time.â
âItâs all going to work out for them. They are sensitive and kind daughters. And Iâm sure they want their mother to rest. Iâll go check my emails.â
Lindsay touched his arm. âIâm glad youâre here.â
After he left Lindsayâs bedroom, Harris wished Phoebe hadnât left. It wouldâve been nice to chat with her while Lindsay took a nap. What would it have been like to have memories of our daughters as children? Heâd seen all the photo albums of Phoebe and some of the schoolwork Lindsay had kept through the years. Heâd read the letters from Katie too.
His guilt had been weighing on him ever since heâd received Lindsayâs letter. Or maybe it had happened years ago when heâd rejected a beautiful young woman. Heâd taken a lot away from her. Sheâd tried to reach out to him, but heâd been selfish. Why didnât he do what his heart told him and return quickly to tell Lindsay that he wouldnât marry Callie? Ironically, he was twenty-two years oldâthe same age his daughters were now.
